Film Trailer Research: Inception / Salt

Inception

1) Fast paced cut shots to suggest a lot of action, also CU of the movies selling point actors, mainly Leonardo DiCaprio. CU used of the characters looking intense to suggest dramatic scenes and to suggest quite a serious tone and mood to the film. Loud soundtrack alongside the main plot of the film to add a more serious tone also to the film.

2) Trailer suggests some out of world, in this case the mind, settings through on screen text and the back track of DiCaprio describing key elements to the film. This out of world theme is also backed up by certain key scenes such as the bending of the seemingly realistic city and the appearance of zero gravity action. This therefore suggest the theme of post-modern realism, alike the Matrix, about how we perceive real happenings to fake happenings, such as the fake dreams in Inception.

3) The trailer establishes that it is a action/thriller genre. Fast paced editing is used throughout alike in many modern action films to make an audience fixated on the screen and to try and stand out from other movie trailers. The shots also suggest action as there are clips of fighting with Joseph Gordon Levitt and other main characters, an essential part in action films. The thriller genre is set up through the Dicaprio dialogue, screen text and some of the shots shown in the trailer that bend reality such as the clip with the manipulated city setting, therefore showing a more thrilling part of the film. The dialogue and screen text give a brief description of what is happening in the trailer but does not give away to much about the film, a thriller genre is established through the use of action contrasted with thought provoking, complex narrative.

4) Since this is a high concept film it is hard to pin point a particular audience that is targeted, but we could assume that anyone over 15, since the film opened up as a 15. We could also assume that particular older audiences would not be targeted by this film due to the large, loud action with a lot of SFX, therefore I would write that the target audience is from 15 to around 40/50, this could also be shown through the main characters ages in the film such as DiCaprio and Gordon Levitt who could attract audiences in their 30’s whilst the younger Ellen Page could attract younger audiences.

5) The reason for using the director’s name and previous is for the desired effect of simply attracting a larger audience. The director’s previous works include other large, popular high concept films such as The Dark Knight, may attract that audience, if they liked that particular film created by the same director that audience would be attracted to come to this film if they knew that it had the same director. This would also be same for fans of the director rather than the previous film he did, these fans or potential audience would be more encouraged to go and watch inception as they would know now the information about the film having the same director.

1) Straight away the focus is put on the big star of the film, Angelina Jolie, with a CU of her in shallow focus meaning even more focus is put on her due to a blurred out background and this trend carries on throughout the trailer with the majority of shots having her in frame. Another factor that makes Jolie stand out is that she is the only female character in the trailer therefore making her stand out from the majority of male co-stars. The use of sound is used to advertise and show the audience who the main character is after it is confirmed who the Russian spy is, Jolie’s character, the previous mellow background music now changes to a typical action trailer soundtrack to create a more exhilarating piece of film and draw the audience into the action. The editing of the trailer to show the main character is used alongside the use of camera work, Jolie gains the first film shot of the trailer therefore showing the audience who the main character is. Fast paced jump cuts are also used to show that it is an action film, along with the use of the films main stunts and explosions. IT should also be noted that the only cast credit given in the whole trailer is Angelina Jolie a less than subtle way of showing the films promotion and focus on the actress.

2) Male audiences are attracted to action films usually because of the actual action within the film, including stunts, explosion and fight sequences, and the key aspects of an action film. The trailer shows all of these such as Angelina jumping from a bridge and the building explosion; therefore this film would attract a male audience. The star selling point would also attract a male audience because this star is Angelina Jolie, therefore also attracting a male audience. But, this star selling point could attract female audiences through Jolie due to her other roles played in more dramatic films such as Changeling
