Costume and Mise-en-Scene

Tomos our main character will wear plain yet stylish clothes that represents a cooler and calmer side of the common male teenager. His attire would consists of plain oxford shirts, sweats with slim fit and chinos styled trousers. This to attract our target audience of 15-24 year olds and also add to the indie vibe of our soundtrack of our film, all of these factors will allow the target audience to relate to the character more.

Our Father will dress in a typical middle aged-middle class way, ralph lauren, woolen jumpers and beige trousers. The mother will attempt to dress really quite elegant, but her clothes will always look slightly awkward and colours wont match right, to give the audience a feeling that she is slightly neurotic. This could also attract an older audience as well as our target audience, the theme of parenthood could also attract an older audience also.

These two people represent the clothing and style that we believe our character would have, to show a stero typical teenager in terms of their stance, fashion and gestures. We would want Tomos to wear pretty ordinary clothing such as a hoodie, trousers and trainers and wear nothing outlandish or too colorful so the audience are not distracted by the costume and focus more on the narrative. His body movement will be quite tense at the beginning as he is settling into his new location in London, this will become casual when begins to relax in his new setting, however he will start to become more nervous as the narrative pogress' to show that they are more aware of what is happening inside of the house. The props for Tomos could include evidence to show he was from another country (passport) and to suggest he has a family back in Germany (photos, phone messages or calls).

Our father in our opening two minutes will only be briefly seen, but his dress style should be very british and that should be clear. He will be smart casual to represent his middle class status and clothing such as ralph lauren shirts, work trousers and sleeveless jumpers. This costume will make it clear to the audience his middle aged but seemingly quite normal, this is to disguise the underlying violence by the Dad.
His voice will be deep and have exaggeration with little body movement or gestures to suggest that he is keeping something secret from Tomos, his awkwardness will add tension to the opening scene as already the audience will be able to assume that something is not right inside the house. The props he could carry around or have on his person would be used to explicitly show his 'normalness' such as a watch, wallet etc.
