The audience we are aiming to target will be males and females ranging from 15-24 who are interested in the Thriller genre. We would hope to have our filmed classified as a 15 as there will be uses of strong language and violence, it would not fit an 18 classification as the language and violence is not that frequent. The definition of a film rated as a 15 by the BBFC (British Board of Film Classification) as having a strong threat of horror, frequent strong language and strong violence, our film narrative will include all of these points. Examples of films also classified as a 15 that could be shown as alike our own would be the British crime thriller 'Bullet Boy' and British drama 'Fish tank'.
Our film would fit into the cross genre of Psychological/Thriller this has scene to be a popular genre recently with films the Inception, Shutter Island and Donnie Darko. The difference with ‘Exchange’ is that it has an element of Art house, the filming, soundtrack and ambience in the film will be not so typical this will attract the niche market of art house which has got seemingly popular year by year.
The genre of a thriller can be shown to be popular in this age range as many create a large amount of good critical reviews, contemporary film examples of thrillers include 'Inception' (2010), 'Black Swan' (2010) and 'Sin City' (2005). All of these have gained critical and Box Office success (all films included in top 50 films), we believe that thriller films are popular in our target audience of 15-24 year olds as they are entertaining and can be watched with a group of friends, the films have more intelligent narratives than other particular genres such as action or adventure films.
The film will also appeal to a more international audience due to the co-production with other European film studios such as Pathe and Studio Canal. This co production would mean that they would also want to sell to the target audience in the countries they are based in such as France and Germany for example. Also, since Tomos is supposed to be a German character, this may mean an attraction by a German audience as they would relate to Tomos being in a foreign country and also coming from Germany. We would want to attract a foreign audience as this would create a larger revenue for the film in the box office because of word and mouth in these different countries if the film is successfully created.
Our main character is 17 so this may attract a slightly younger audience rather than older, the film will be British made so many locations and events will happen in places where a British audience will recognise. The general feel for the film will be quite British attracting anyone interested in British culture to the film. This character is a teenager as therefore it would attract members of our target audience 15-24 year olds as they would be more likely to relate to the character more compared to a character who was older.
The way we are going to attract our audience would be through various uses of implicit and explicit advertising that we would think would attract our target audience of 15-24 year olds. This would include movie posters, a website and most likely TV adverts, since this film is not a blockbuster we would have to be careful on what time we show the adverts on TV and also where we place our adverts for our film. A cheap way of advertising for our target audience would be through viral means such as placing a trailer or clips of our film on internet video websites such as you tube and information of our film on the films website.
The new audience are attracted to more viral ways of advertising such as through internet video website such as You Tube or Google Videos. Viral video watching is becoming more popular each year with more and more people turning to the internet to find out different information on an array of subjects such as movies. Our film could easily tap into this market of advertising such as creating a website for the film our plugging adverts before videos on You Tube. However, we will aim to do this on a narrow selection of videos such as other film trailers that show films that our alike ours for exmaple.
